What is Research Artivism?
What is Research Artivism?
Research Artivism refers to a mode of scholarly engagement and activism that combines research with artistic expression, particularly in the form of sequential art. This approach seeks to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and wider public engagement by using multimodal modes of communication (e.g. images, gestures, music, movement, language) and other artistic mediums to convey complex research findings and critical perspectives.
Developed by Josephine H. Pham and collaborating creators, “Mai Research Artivism” offers pedagogical resources in the form of comics to explore the lived practices of K-12 teachers of Color working towards liberatory education.
With the intentions of reimagining how knowledge is created, produced, represented, and disseminated in the academy, Mai Pedagogy Project also includes “Featured Research Artivists” who are invited to communicate their scholarship related to racial justice teaching and learning through creative expression.
